Our boxer/bulldog mix, Duke, was hit by possibility by a vehicle or farm equipment. It was an unwitnessed incident. We immediately brought him into The Cove. We were immediately met by Sara, the vet tech, as soon as we arrived who was very reassuring that our fur baby was in good hands for evaluation. The front desk staff was very friendly and accommodating. The reception even provided me with a charger for my cell phone since my battery was about to die as we were waiting. Dr. Melissa Krause was very information, compassionate and patient as she explained the x-ray finds and possible treatment options. I feel she also went above and beyond by getting me her phone number that I could text her with any questions or concerns after our visit since we were taking our injuried boxer home with us until he could be see the following week for a surgical consult. Also the veterinary tech, Sara, was extremely patient and compassionate to me and my husband as we were feeling overwhelmed and emotional about Duke's injuries. Unfortunately, we have received emergency services at the Cove three times now and each of our experiences have be wonderful, even under bad circumstances. We live in the Ivor, VA area and I feel grateful these emergency services are available. I have and will continue to recommend The Cove.
a year that she had a very high quality of life. Dr Small was straight forward with me but in a compassionate way. They worked with me on pricing to get more affordable care for her. I could call whenever there were any concerns or issues (at any hour), and they would advise me on what steps to take to help the situation. All of the staff had excellent communication with each other and with me- which is very important when your pet has a heart condition. When she passed, they were genuine and so very kind. I highly recommend The Cove to others.
I went to Dr Fox, who is a very nice lady, very kind. Dr Fox is touted as a dentist by THE COVE, but she is really a resident in dentistry and not yet a full-fledged dentist at this time, which they will tell you if you specifically ask. My cat was dying with mouth cancer. Dr Fox said she was certain it was mouth cancer and that the cat would only live a few months (2 other vets confirmed this by their exams). Still, Dr Fox was very much in favor of doing a biopsy of the cancer to prove what it was in spite of the fact that the biopsy would bleed and cause stress to my cat without really prolonging his life; it had the potential of causing pain for a while (weeks?) after the biopsy. I did not want my cat to have to live his final days suffering from a biopsy when the only option after that would be radical surgery which would neither cure the condition nor prolong his life (and make him miserable). The COVE eventually sold me a narcotic for my cat's cancer pain at $32 for 1.0 ml of buprenorphone. For a renewal, I went to The Dog and Cat Hospital of Ghent, where they charged me $6 for 1.5 ml (COST 5 TIMES LESS FOR 50% MORE MEDICINE). I then finally realized that The COVE was most interested in money and wanted to do a biopsy for $800-1000 which would have been totally unnecessary. Dr Fox was kind and seemed competent, but I would not recommend them as any better than a local vet, for example, than The Dog and Cat Hospital of Ghent, which was much less expensive in every way and compassionate and fairly competent as well. I would avoid THE COVE if you can-- they will bill you heavily and try to scare you into doing unneeded procedures, which is where the money is.
The vets/doctors here are very knowledgeable and are very kind- as they know that if you're there, you're dealing with an emergency or a stressful chronic health issues of your beloved pet. Dr Small (cardiology) gave my precious cat a year more of life than anyone else thought she would have-
Thanks guys for your care.
I have had several pets cared for by this exceptional group, most recently my cat Samson. They have always been kind, compassionate, and professional. Wish i could use them as my regular vet!
Sincerely, Lane Parker
We were from out of town when our dog became very ill and had to be hospitalized. The vet Dr. Melissa Krause was excellent and so kind. Thank you all for the wonderful care that Jackson received. You even reimbursed us for meds that we didn't receive...wow!
